Not exactly scary
Although not quite as bad as its sequel Attack of the Mutant, Escape from Horrorland is far from being a decent game. It stands as a sequel to the hugely popular kids horror novel, One Day at Horrorland, and was produced by Dreamworks, but even the involvement of legendary director Steven Spielberg can't help it from being little more than average. If you are a fan of the book, then you might find some amusement here but otherwise, you can happily skip this. This one finds several of the book's characters visiting the titular theme park. However, things go a bit wobbly when some of them are captured, so if falls to two plucky heroes to venture inside and rescue them, before they can all escape with their lives. However, in order to do so, you must first face off against a variety of classic horror villains, including Dracula, a werewolf, a mummy and more. What this turns into is a very basic sort of maze game, a bit like a 3D version of Pac Man, but with some mild horror elements. There isn't a lot to do, other than wander around, collecting a few items and occasionally defeating one of the monsters, and it all gets pretty tedious quickly. The visuals and presentation aren't great, with environments being pretty bland and uninteresting, although the monster design fares a little better, with some vaguely well designed creatures to scare you. However, it's the gameplay which is the biggest problem and it simply isn't varied or enjoyable enough to be able to recommend this to anyone but the biggest Goosebumps fan.
