On the evening of April 7, 1974, he was on his way to visit a friend and had to drive over what’s been described as a “Y-shaped” bridge. The bridge had been damaged by some major flooding in 1972 and had been under construction fortwo years,yet it was lacking safety barriers, signs, or anything else alerting drivers to the fact that between the two lanes of the bridge there was a gaping hole large enough for someone to drive a full-size car into. Buntrock was the unlucky driver who did. Most reports say that rescue crews were called quickly but did not arrive in time. Let’s face it, even if help had arrived in 5 minutes, his odds of survival still would have been just about nil. The diver who went on the “rescue” mission said that Buntrock tried to get out, but the sides of the hole blocked him from getting the car door open more than 4 inches or so. That’s the stuff nightmares are made of. If he had had one of those window-breaking hammer-type devices, he might have been able to break out the back window and escape. (That’s a subtle hint to everyone who does not have one of those in their cars.)
Bobby lost his life in an automobile accident on a bridge in Keystone, South Dakota on April 7, 1974. According to the World Heritage Encyclopedia, the bridge had been severely damaged two years previously in the South Dakota Flood of 1972. There was a large hole in the middle of the bridge with at least 3.1 to 4.6 metres (10 to 15 feet) of water in the hole from the creek. Unfortunately, there were no warning signs or barricades to call attention to the danger. Bobby was en route to visit a friend when his car slid off the side of the road and flipped over into the water.
The accident was reported and divers arrived at the scene. They eventually reached the car and discovered Bobby’s body. Bobby had tried to escape, but he had been unable to pry the door open far enough due to the mud and the sheer force of the water
Shirley Booth, who had played Hazel, was reportedly distraught when she heard the news, as she and Buntrock had grown close over the course of the show.
Rumors have persisted for years that Buntrock’s mother perished in an accident on the same bridge a year or two before his death. It’s an interesting urban legend, although completely untrue. She did die two years before he did, but she died at home from cardiac arrest.
Bobby Buntrock is buried in Mountain View Cemetery (also known as Keystone Cemetery) in South Dakota, which is touted as the only cemetery in the world with a view of Mount Rushmore.

In the fifth and final season (1965-1966) shown on CBS, the series was retooled after DeFore and Blake were dismissed and Harold lived with his Uncle Steve Baxter (Ray Fulmer), Aunt Barbara (Lynn Borden), and cousin Susie (Julia Benjamin). During the run of Hazel, Buntrock was tutored on the set and attended Lake Marie Public School in Whittier when the show was on hiatus.
